Disable Windows XP Log On Screen

Printer friendly version: click here

Don't you hate when you get the log on screen and you have to click the name to log on?

Now you can turn it off and boot straight to the desktop and speeding up your boot time.

NOTE: This tip is for users who only use one "Name" (account) even though multiple accounts show up on the log on screen.

There are 2 ways of doing this....

Windows XP Home users

First thing to do is.....
Go to the Microsoft PowerToys for Windows XP site
Download & install....Tweak UI

When Tweak UI opens....
1. Go to....Logon
2. Click the plus next to Logon to expand the sub listing
3. Select...Autologon
4. Put a check in "Log on automatically at system startup"
5. Click Apply and click OK

The above fix may not work after downloading and installing all available windows updates.

Installing Windows .Net framework will install a ASP.NET user account which may cause you to get the log on screen.

1. Go to "Control Panel"

2. Open "User Accounts"

Here you should see 3 accounts but you may have more such as accounts created for family members.

1. Default - the one you currently use to log on with.

2. Guest

3. ASP.Net

1. Turn off "Guest" account

2. Delete the "ASP.NET" account (turning it off is not an option & is not needed for most users).

3. Delete any other accounts you may have, such as accounts created for kids or other family members.

With only one working account, Windows will now boot straight to the desktop.

Windows XP Pro users

1. Go to....Start....Run....type "control userpasswords2" and click OK

2. Highlight the account that you normally log on with...mine is "Me".
3. Uncheck "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer"
4. Click "Apply"
5. When you click the "Apply" button, the "Automatically Log On" window will pop up
6. Enter your User name that shows up on the log on screen when windows starts up, if it's not already there.
7. Enter your Password if you have have one that you use to log on with, otherwise, leave it blank. Click "OK" and the next time you reboot your system, it should log you in automatically.
